Born in Nagasaki, Japan, Kanahi Yamashita has carved a distinctive path that balances technical mastery with a profound expressive depth. As the recipient of the 35th Idemitsu Music Award (2026)—one of Japan’s most coveted honors across all musical disciplines—Yamashita is recognized for an artistry that transcends the traditional boundaries of the classical guitar, bringing a profound, orchestral-scale vision to the concert stage.
Yamashita’s recent seasons have been marked by a series of high-profile triumphs on the global stage. Following a landmark 2024 solo Japan tour, she has become a central figure in Japan’s premiere concert halls, including Suntory Hall and Kioi Hall, and has appeared as a soloist with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra.
Her international presence is equally commanding, with notable performances at the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Tokyo Spring Festival, and major festivals across Europe, Mexico, China, and Australia.
A passionate advocate for the collaborative possibilities of her instrument, Yamashita’s 2026 season is highlighted by an extensive South American tour with violinist Mayumi Kanagawa as Duo Lotos, including a debut at the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo. Her commitment to chamber music is further evidenced by her work in Duo Musubi, winners of the 2025 Gerhard-Vogt Chamber Music Competition.
Yamashita’s development was shaped by the dual influence of her father, the legendary guitarist Kazuhito Yamashita, and her mother, the acclaimed composer Keiko Fujiie.
Having toured internationally from childhood as a member of the Yamashita Family Quintet, she has since evolved into a formidable solo presence, synthesizing her heritage with the rigor of European tradition. Her artistic identity was further refined in Germany, where she completed her studies with distinction under Thomas Müller-Pering at the University of the Arts Berlin and Björn Colell at the University of Music Nuremberg.
Her discography includes a critically acclaimed 2021 recording of works by Carlo Domeniconi, complemented by frequent broadcasts on BR-Klassik and NHK-FM. A semifinalist at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich and winner of the German Guitar Prize, her development has been supported by the Yamaha and Rohm Music Foundations. Since 2021, she has been a D’Addario Artist, representing the brand on the global stage.
