“...Duo Brasil transforms stages into living dialogues, where tradition and passion converge in harmony... "
Duo Brasil brings together two of Brazil’s most prominent musicians on the international scene: soprano Eliane Coelho and pianist Gustavo Carvalho, in a project that explores the fusion of European classical music with Brazilian repertoire.
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Eliane Coelho has built an international career spanning more than forty years. She was a member of the Ensemble Neue Musik Hannover, the Frankfurt Opera, and later the Vienna State Opera, where she was awarded the title of Kammersängerin in 1998. She has appeared on the stages of major European opera houses, including La Scala and the Opéra Bastille, alongside artists such as Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Leo Nucci, and Bryn Terfel. Her extensive repertoire includes 14 leading Verdi roles, as well as Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Turandot, Lulu, Salome, and Brünnhilde (Die Walküre), earning critical acclaim for her expressive depth and impeccable technique.
Pianist Gustavo Carvalho studied with Oleg Maisenberg in Vienna and Elisso Virsaladze in Moscow. Winner of the 2nd Nelson Freire Competition, he has performed at venues such as the Tonhalle Zurich, the Vienna Musikverein, the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, and the Grand Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. He has appeared as a soloist under conductors including Ira Levin and Yuri Bashmet, and as a chamber musician with artists such as Nelson Freire and members of the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic orchestras. His interest in contemporary music has led him to collaborate with composers such as György Kurtág and Samir Odeh-Tamimi.
Eliane Coelho and Gustavo Carvalho met in Vienna in the 1990s and gave their first joint recital in Moscow in 2006. Since then, they have performed in major concert halls across Brazil and abroad, presenting Lieder by Brahms, Schumann, Strauss, and Rachmaninoff, as well as Brazilian repertoire and landmark chamber works such as Schönberg’s Pierrot Lunaire and Shostakovich’s Seven Romances on Poems by Blok.
Duo Brasil stands out for its ability to unite the European classical tradition with the melodic and rhythmic richness of Brazil, offering performances of exceptional expressive power and artistic sensitivity.
